I had the GoPro Hero 10 with me for the whole trip. I took a little bit of video each day, except for the shortened 5th day. Even though I have a mount on top of my helmet, I tried to take some by just holding the camera instead. A lot of the scenery is so similar that I didn’t take a whole lot. On the next segment, I will try to do a little better capturing some of the trip.
The spreadsheet above is a quick view of some of the riding details. I got the Estimated numbers from Google Maps. I got the Actual numbers from my Garmin Fenix 5s Plus. I mentioned before that I had the Garmin Edge 830 for navigation, but I didn’t use the numbers from that device. I’m not sure why, but the mileage, elevation, and calories are always higher from the Edge.
I did find it interesting that the Elevation Gain numbers from Google Maps wasn’t even close to what my Garmin devices showed. “Essentially Flat” was what Google indicated, but there was definitely some up and down going through Ohio. Not a huge amount, but more than “Flat”.
Travel Update: I’m not ready to head out on the road yet. My plan B is my brother Mike coming up from Arizona to drive me to the restart and then provide support if I need it. Camping is out for the rest of the journey, so we’ll be staying in hotels, bed and breakfasts, etc. I’m shooting to get on the road again next Saturday, June 4th.
On the elevation discrepancy, I wonder if google is calculating the overall difference between gain and loss. So, over the first 5 days, that would be 1 foot actual, ~300 feet estimated.
I don’t know. I get both the elevation gain and the elevation loss and both numbers are off. I’m actually riding the course using 3 different GPS readings and they are all similar, but the Google Maps isn’t. Strange!
D,
Good to see you have come around to Johnny B’s perspective of no more campgrounds. You’re welcome.
No, I’m not even close to your perspective :-). The big difference this time is that I will be riding by myself and instead of trying to hit a specific pre-determined place each night, I am trying to be a little more flexible — ride longer if it’s good, ride shorter if the weather or juice isn’t there. Hotels usually have better availability for that type of approach. It won’t be bad sleeping in real beds though — no doubt there.
Upgrading the accommodations is a good idea. Some hot weather coming load up the camelback with ice.
Good idea. Ice machines in the hotels will come in handy.
good plan B
So appreciative of your offer to help Jim!
What a great adventure it is and was. I can say we all learned a great deal about the road and the road learned about us also. What a great trip and ride. Thank you
Glad to have you along! That was fun.
Enjoyed going along with you 4. And I didn’t even catch COVID. Just a thought; you have a great trip planned out. I’ll bet you could get several other folks to ride different segments of the trail if you put out the invite. A great way for a person to ‘get away and meditate’.
I have a couple of friends who are going to meet me at different spots if it all works out. I’ve got to get back out there.
