So good! So good!! The day really was splendid!! Cool temperatures, mostly sunny skies, and good company. We started out by cutting through the Penn State campus. This picture is near Shortlidge Rd and E. College Ave. The campus is beautiful. I’ve been there before, but I don’t remember much — probably not because of the partying :-). Everything seemed well kept; the buildings, the grassy common areas, and the houses just off campus in their historic districts. We had a lot of fun starting the day off riding through it all. I think I was dressed appropriately for the occasion; wearing my Maize and Blue colors.
This picture is in the town of Centre Hall, at the corner of route 192 and S. Pennsylvania Ave. You can barely see Mike in front of the church on the middle right. It was shortly after this picture that Mike had to turn around, but that was 15 miles into my ride. Unfortunately, he had to get back and get the truck. I think he’s itching to just keep going but then we’d be in a quandary.
This is the turn around spot. Mike had to figure out how to get back and was setting up his electronics for the assist. For me, I was on this road for another 36 miles and the video below shows a little bit of the ride.
I only went through a couple of towns. In this video, the first town was Madisonburg and I only saw the white church on the corner. I think there was more to the town North on route 445. The second town was Rebersburg and there are a lot of houses and buildings along route 192. In 2020, there were 595 people living in Rebersburg (according to Wikipedia.) I sped up the playback so it looks like I’m going really fast — I wasn’t.
The tally for the day was 64.76 miles with 2562 ft of elevation gain, from State College to New Columbia. I may be getting stronger — it was a long ride but I felt really good. Nutrition is probably the key and I’m doing my best to do it right.
After we got to our lodging for the night, the Holiday Inn Express, Mike and I traveled into nearby Milton for lunch at the Milltown Deli. We each had a lemonade, he had the Panther Panini(chicken and spinach dip), and I had the Marilyn Monroe Panini (chicken, pepperoni, and cheese). The sandwiches were big and delicious and I would highly recommend a stop if you are in the area.
Another big day tomorrow as I make my way from New Columbia to Drums-Hazelton. It’s supposed to rain until 11am, so it may be a late start, but I hope I find a window to make this happen. Stay tuned!
Chicken and Spinach Dip on a Panini sounds Amazing!!!
That is the #1 sandwich on their menu, according to the owner’s son who we chatted up. Mike loved it!
Your getting closer to Chester Springs!
Jay — I’ve got Thursday/Friday in PA and then crossing into NJ. Can’t wait to meet you on the road.
Strong work, D! Brother Mike needs some Meechigan-ware 😉
He sure does!! My fault. I’ll have to pick up some gear for him when we get back.
That ride through rural PA looked phenomenal!
It was a good ride. One of the best so far!
Getting closer to Jersey!
Wow! I know. I’ll be on the border Friday evening. I’ll have an 18 mile ride into Hope on Saturday — I hope you have some time to show us around!!!
That town looked awesome, I forget about all of these small towns in the USA. The towns don’t appear to have aged much in the last 40 years, just like us . . . not! Really enjoying the daily updates, thanks so much for taking the time to put this out. Cheers,
It’s amazing Ian, I’ve cruised through a lot of them on this trip and they really do seem frozen in time. It’s really cool. My ride today (Thursday) went through a lot more towns and it was really fun!
