Day 16 – The Big Up

By far the most difficult riding day.  I rode 67 miles with 4300 feet of elevation gain.  We started in Wilkes-Barre and ended up in Towanda.  Yes, still in Pennsylvania, but not for long.  We’re 20 miles from the NY border which we plan to cross tomorrow.  This picture was from a Scenic Overlook on Route 6 just North of Wyalusing.  I followed the Susquehanna River all day, but I was only able to see it periodically.

The day started at D’s diner in Wilkes-Barre.  It was the perfect namesake. Mike and I had a great breakfast fitting for a lot of riding.  We both took off from the parking lot and rode 8 miles to get through Pittison before Mike turned around to get the truck.  Once he got to Towanda, he got on his bike and rode 13 miles south to meet me.  That’s a total of 42 for him with a lot of climbing as well.

I couldn’t help but show this type of graph again.  That’s why this post got the name “The Big Up”.

    1. Indeed! It was my most miles and my most elevation gain. Crazy. I feel pretty good, even after another 78 miles today. I have 2 big days ahead; 72 to Rochester, and 80 to Niagara Falls.

  1. George W. Howell lived in West Pittston. There are a lot of descendants of Hugh Howell buried and living up that way.
    Safe travels.

  2. My mom’s parents lived in Pennsylvania and my dad’s parents were in New Jersey, so I remember my dad driving those Pennsylvania Hills well! I also remember billboards throughout Pennsylvania for a store called Lumber 88 (or something like that).
Does anybody remember the old skit by Abbott and Costello “The Susquehanna hat company”? 🤣

    1. Great flashbacks Dan! I’ve seen the 88 Lumber stores, even in Michigan. I saw a couple out here too.

I didn’t remember the A&C skit until I brought it up on YouTube. I do now — pretty funny. “Can you tell me where Bagel Street is?”

  3. Those east coast telephone poles are more effective than speed bumps. I’m flinching watching your video as each pole passes…
