Day 17 – Helloooo NY!!!!

Yay! I feel like I made some great progress today. After a hilly 22 miles, I crossed into NY.  I’m finally out of Pennsylvania!  Don’t get me wrong — I love PA; the countryside, the farms, the small towns, the people giving me room as they pass, and whoever ordered great weather for the whole 12 days I rode there. But I loved seeing this welcome sign.

Mike just missed the sign.  He rode with me to Sayre, PA (about 1.5 miles before NY) and then turned around to get the truck.  I think he had a harder ride than I did.  The 1st 20 miles weren’t as difficult as yesterday, but there were a couple decent sized hills and a lot of rolling hills that posed a challenge. So he did a hilly 41 miles out and back to Towanda, and my last 60 were moderately flat as I continued North-West to Bath for a total of 78 miles for the day.

There were a lot of small towns along Routes 1043, 56, 60, 352, and 415.  I didn’t take many pictures but I did find the Corning WHQ building in Corning, NY and thought it blog-worthy.

In the middle of Bath, I crossed this intersection.  To the right is the Pioneers Cemetery.  I wonder if any Howells were buried there? I want to know who this street was named after.  Ugh!  I just end up with more questions every day 🙂

  1. My grandmother on my Dad’s side finished her last few year’s in what can only be called ” an old folks home “, in Bath, NY.

    1. The old folks home is unfortunate for sure. Today, it looks like an excellent place to be. It has a really cute park in downtown that was cleared in 1793 by Col. Charles Williamson — called Pulteney Square.

  2. Becko sent me the link to your blog today and I loved reading all about your journey from the start…the good, the bad, and the hilly. I appreciated the beginning OH part and I have been to Clyde, Norwalk, and Findley State Park. Way to go! Your trip is amazing!

  3. When I lived in Endicott, NY (just north of the Susquehanna River) my sales territory included Sayre, Towanda and a lot of little towns in the Southern Tier of NY. Enjoy!

    1. Pretty area! Fun to bike ride through. Not sure I would want to live here though. Thanks for the fun facts on Johnny B. I did not know you lived here.

  4. In the Hope Cemetery in Corning there is a huge monument for the Howell’s some of our relatives are buried there. And no the Bath, NY ones are not related. 🙂

    1. I didn’t take any time to explore the cemeteries up here. Bummer that the Bath, NY Howells came from Edward (probably) and not Hugh.
