Day 18 – Finger Lakes

I changed the route!  In tracing the family’s path to Canada, I would have had to go to Avon or Batavia today, and then to Buffalo tomorrow.  That didn’t seem as fun as going nearly straight North to Rochester and passing by beautiful Lake Honeoye in the Finger Lakes area. This picture was taken in the North-East area of the lake in a summer cottage type neighborhood. I lingered for a little while and it took all my resolve not to spend the afternoon swimming here.

The biggest reason I went to Rochester was to pick up the Erie Canal Trail.  On the map in the picture above, you can see the route I’ll be taking heading West out of Rochester.  The full trail is 365 miles long and goes from Albany to Buffalo, but I will only need 80 miles of it to get to Niagara Falls tomorrow.  I rode it for about 10 miles today.

Here’s a quick summary of the day.  I rode from Bath to Rochester.  The riding was a lot like what I’m used to in the West suburbs of Detroit.  Another 72 miles today for a 3 day total of 217 miles.  I felt a little fatigued today, but with a nice tailwind and good roads, I was able to power through.

Tomorrow’s ride is from Rochester to Niagara Falls.  It’s 80 miles, but almost all of it is along the pretty flat Erie Canal Trail.  I’m crossing my fingers that the forecast for rain will not be accurate.  Either way, I’ll be riding 🙂

  1. Finger Lakes are beautiful and Erie Canal route has a great historic feel. Nice route choice! Hope the weather stays dry and the path is smooth!

    1. Super lucky on the weather for 3 weeks. It rained on Day 1 in the middle of the ride, but we were able to sit under cover and let it blow over. I had a couple of threats for rain, but never got wet. Clean living 🙂

  2. Hey, D, thanks for the homeschool hat tip. The trip continues to be awesome. Stay out of any barrels while in Niagra Falls…bars okay, barrels not. The scenery is amazing

    1. Whew! No barrels. I had to keep an eye on Mike — he probably wanted to stuff me in one and send me over the falls.

Yeah, it was your idea on the home schooling concept — I’m not sure how you make that work on a bike with kids :-), but it would be pretty cool via car/bus too.

I have been through those areas before, but always in a hurry on a major interstate highway. The scenery is WAY different when it slows down at bike speed off the beaten path. I highly recommend that view for everyone. It was SOOO cool!!!
